Black Myth: Wukong OST《戒网》

戒网 Jie Wang

Title lit. Restraint-Web.
戒/jie is taken from Bajie’s name, meaning the ‘Eight Restraint’ of Buddha. 网/wang means net or web, this is the hint for the other person, Violet Spider.

[Spider] In vain, let black silk wait into white hair
Note:唐·李白Tang dynasty, Li Bai《将进酒》“君不见,高堂明镜悲白发,朝如青丝暮成雪” “Do you not see, before the bright mirror in the high hall, they grieve over white hair; in the morning it is like black silk, by evening it turns to snow.”

5【男声】清泉无垢倒映着 我的心

[Pig] A clear spring without stain, prints back my heart.
Note:明·吴承恩Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng’en《西游记》第七十二回 Journey to the West, Chapter 72 “盘丝洞七情迷本,濯垢泉八戒忘形” “In the Spider-Silk Cave, the seven emotions delude the root; at the Filth-Cleansing Spring, Bajie forgets his form.”

6【女声】恨到归时方始休
[Spider] This hate will only then begin to rest, when you return.
Note:唐·白居易 Tang dynasty, Bai Juyi《长相思·汴水流》“思悠悠 sī yōu yōu,恨悠悠 hèn yōu yōu,恨到归时方始休,月明人倚楼” “Long, long the longing; long, long the hate. This hate will only begin to rest when you return, as under the bright moon, she leans on the tower.” Hate here is more like sorrow.

7【男声】为何心有灵犀 从来难长久
[Pig] Why, when hearts have spirit-rhino, one hidden thread running through, has it never lasted long?
Note:唐·李商隐 Tang dynasty, Li Shangyin《无题》“身无彩凤双飞翼,心有灵犀一点通” “The body has no paired wings of colored phoenix to fly together; yet the heart has spirit-rhino, one hidden thread running through.” 
Comment: 灵犀 Spirit-rhino, a metaphor for special spirited connection. It was thought that rhinos are spirited/supernatural creatures, and a white marking connects the ends of its horn.

8【女声】得见青天总在雨打风吹后
[Spider] To finally see the blue sky is always after rain beating and wind blowing.
说明:明·吴承恩 Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng’en《西游记》第六十二回 Journey to the West, Chapter 62 “得见青天” “to finally see the blue sky.” This is an original jttw idiom meaning: finally being freed from punishment or from oppression.

 

9【男声】知我千万头绪烦忧

[Pig] (Those who) know me: my ten thousand threads of troubled worries.

10【女声】不知谓我何求

[Spider] (Those who) do not know me say: what is it I seek?

Note:先秦 Pre-Qin《诗经·王风·黍离》“知我者谓我心忧,不知我者谓我何求” “Those who know me say my heart is worried; those who do not know me say: what is it I seek?”

Note:先秦 Pre-Qin《诗经·邶风·击鼓》“执子之手,与子偕老” “Holding your hand, with you I grow old together.”
Comment: This is actually from a poem about a soldier leaving for war, following his general, not knowing where he is anymore. He thinks about the promise he made with his wife, to never part, to hold hands and grow old together. Yet he’s too far to go home again, cannot fulfill his promise.

 

13【男声】为何相见恨晚 情深却不寿

[Pig] Why to meet and regret that the meeting came too late, does deep feeling not live long?
Note:“相见恨晚” Idiom lit.  “To meet and regret that the meeting came too late”. 现代·金庸Modern era, Jin Yong《书剑恩仇录》“情深不寿,强极则辱。谦谦君子,温润如玉”。“Deep feeling does not live long; strength at its extreme brings humiliation. A modest gentleman, warm and smooth as jade.”

14【女声】管他虚情假意花落水自流

[Spider] Let it be false feeling and fake intention; flowers fall, water flows on its own.
Note:宋·李清照Song dynasty, Li Qingzhao《一剪梅·红藕香残玉簟秋》“花自飘零水自流,一种相思,两处闲愁” “Flowers drift and fall on their own, water flows on its own; one kind of longing, two places of idle sorrow.”

Note:宋·钱时《立冬前一日霜对菊有感》“园林尽扫西风去,惟有黄花不负秋” “Gardens and groves are all swept away by the west wind; only the yellow chrysanthemum does not fail autumn.”

18【男声】踏破银河无觅玉颜红袖

[Pig] Treading through the Silver River, still no finding jade face and red sleeves.
Note:宋·夏元鼎Song dynasty, Xia Yuanding《绝句》“踏破铁鞋无觅处,得来全不费功夫”。“After wearing through iron shoes, nowhere to be found; when obtained, it takes no effort at all.”
Comment: Bajie was an admiral of the Celestial Court, in charge of the Silver River, aka the Milky Way. This line specifically only applies to him, revealing the identity of the voice. 玉颜红袖 Jade face red sleeve, is an original idiom made by this song’s writer, aka the game’s producer, 冯骥 Feng Ji.

19【女声】寻遍宫阙不见良人佳偶

[Spider] Searching through all heavenly palaces, I see no beloved, no destined pair.
Note:宋·苏轼Song dynasty, Su Shi《水调歌头·明月几时有》“不知天上宫阙,今夕是何年”。I do not know, in the heavenly palaces, what year this night is.”
Comment: Spider, the 7th sister, was a Celestial palace maid. So, this line reveals her identity.

20【男声】一夜雨声多少事 月下强说愁

[Pig] One night of rain-sound, how many matters; under the moon, forcing sorrow into words.
Note:唐·崔道融Tang dynasty, Cui Daorong《秋夕》“一夜雨声多少事,不思量尽到心头” “One night of rain-sound, how many matters; without thinking, all come into the heart.” 宋·辛弃疾Song dynasty, Xin Qiji《丑奴儿·书博山道中壁》“爱上层楼,为赋新词强说愁”。“Loving to climb the high tower, to compose new lyrics, forcing sorrow into words.”

21【女声】红豆如何敢消受

[Spider] These red beans, how could I dare receive?
Note:唐·王维Tang dynasty, Wang Wei《相思》“红豆生南国,春来发几枝”。“Red beans grow in the southern land; when spring comes, how many branches do they put forth?”
 Comment: Red beans have another name: Lovesick Beans. Legend says, once there was a soldier who left for battle, everyday his wife waited for his return by the village tree. Her tears dried up and turned into blood, dripping into the soil. A tree grew from there, fruiting heart shaped red beans. So, people called them Lovesick Beans.

22【男声】功名休问几时成 今朝酒

[Pig] Do not ask when fame and merit will be made; there is wine today.
Note:明·吴承恩Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng’en《西游记》第五回 Journey to the West, Chapter 5  “诗酒且图今朝乐,功名休问几时成”。“With poetry and wine, seek only today’s joy; do not ask when fame and merit will be achieved.” 唐·罗隐Tang dynasty, Luo Yin《自遣》“今朝有酒今朝醉”。If there is wine today, then today be drunk.”
Comment: For Bajie to become a Buddha, during the journey to the west, he must do enough good deed, to gain merits.

23【女声】更无一个肯回头

[Spider] And still, not one is willing to turn back.
Note:明·吴承恩Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng’en《西游记》第一回Journey to the West, Chapter 1 “争名夺利几时休?早起迟眠不自由!骑着驴骡思骏马,官居宰相望王侯。只愁衣食耽劳碌,何怕阎君就取勾?继子荫孙图富贵,更无一个肯回头!” “When will fighting for name and profit ever rest? Rising early, sleeping late, never free. Riding donkeys and mules, they long for fine steeds; serving as prime minister, they look toward kings and lords. They only worry over food and clothing, trapped in toil and labor; why fear the King of Hell sending his hook? Seeking wealth and honor for sons and grandsons, still not one is willing to turn back!”

24【男声】纵然意合情投 怎能长相守

[Pig] Even if matching feeling and fitting intention, how can we keep each other long?
Note:“情投意合” Original idiom from明·吴承恩Ming dynasty, Wu Cheng’en《西游记》第二十七回Journey to the West, Chapter 27 “那镇元子与行者结为兄弟,两人情投意合”。“That Zhenyuanzi and the Pilgrim became sworn brothers; the two were of matching feeling and fitting intention.”

[Spider] Woke as if from drunkenness; it turns out, when feeling is deeply fixed, one is not free.
